Coal worker dead after mine incident

Posted: Updated:

A 27-year-old coal miner died in a crushing accident early Friday morning.

Steven O'Dell was a certified electrician with three years of mining experience, including two and half years at the Pocahontas Mine where he died. O'Dell, from Mt. Nebo, was an employee of Alex Energy, the company that provided labor to the White Buck Coal Company, a subsidiary of Alpha Natural Resources.

"We are all saddened by the loss of a talented colleague and friend," said Craig Boggs, President of Alex Energy. "Our sympathies go out to the O'Dell family. The prayers and thoughts of all of us are with Steven's family at this difficult time."

O'Dell was transported to a nearby hospital from the scene shortly after 1:30 a.m. but died from his injuries. State mine safety officials said he was trapped between a scoop and a continuous miner.

Inspectors from both federal and state mine safety agencies are investigating the accident.
