Sundale Hosts 'Presents for Patients Light Up' Night

Posted: Updated:

Sundale Nursing Home held its annual Presents for Patients Light Up event that provided the residents and guests with entertainment, food, and the lighting of all the Christmas trees and lights.

The event also served as the kick-off for the nursing home's Presents for Patients campaign.

"There are so many great blessings and good things that come out of it for both the recipient and the person that's giving it" said Donna Tennant, marketing and admissions director at Sundale.

Individuals or groups can "adopt" a resident and buy them gifts for Christmas. Tennant said that having West Virginia University nearby is a blessing.

"We're very fortunate because a lot of the college students have hearts of gold. They love coming in and seeing our folks and getting to spend time with them, because they're away from home too, and connecting with an older person makes them feel like they're connecting with their grandparents or somebody from home" Tennant said.

The staff at Sundale had each resident fill out a card, or "wish lists," with the three gifts they would like to receive. The cards can be picked up at Sundale.

For the patients at Sundale, they just request practical things.

"I usually try to pick something that I really need. I need a nice pair of walking shoes. I always like a nice watch, nothing special" said resident Freda Kerns.

After people buy the presents for the patients, they can either deliver them themselves, or drop them off at Sundale for Santa to deliver.

"He's going to make it on the 21st, because he has so many different facilities and so many people to see, that he's going to stop by on the 21st. And he is going to deliver the gifts that folks bring in that they just don't have time to deliver so Santa comes in and visits all of the residents and brings them a gift," Tennant said.

There are still about 250 residents that haven't been adopted. If you would like to adopt one and buy them the gifts on their list, you can call Sundale at 304-599-0497, or email them at
