Marion County Holds Second 'Christmas Toy Shop' Thanks To Community Generosity

Posted: Updated:

An overwhelming amount of generosity in Marion County is giving residents a second chance to take advantage of the "Christmas Toy Shop."

The committee set a goal to raising $10,000, but Marion County stepped up and surpassed that goal by thousands.

"The goal we set financially was ten thousand which was double what we received last year," said Volunteer Holley Faulkner. "We ended up tripling so we have fifteen thousand and money is still coming in."

The generosity from Marion County has the shop opening for the second time.

The generosity isn't stopping, either. Toys are still being donated.

"We've just never seen such an out pour of generosity from Marion County folks," Faulkner said. "It's wonderful."

The toys are given away on a first come, first served basis.

All shoppers have to do is provide proof of Marion County residency and bring the birth certificates of their children.

Volunteers said Black Friday went very well and they expect the same for Tuesday night.

"The day went very smoothly," Faulkner said. "People were very appreciative and we had no problems on the floor at all. Great volunteers. They worked fabulously."

In 2011, the Christmas Toy Shop helped more than 400 families and volunteers are hoping to top that by the end of Tuesday night.

Volunteers said the toys that are not picked up today will go toward relief efforts throughout the county.
