Morgantown Shoppers Support Small Business Saturday

Posted: Updated:

The holiday shopping season is in its biggest weekend.

If you weren't in the holiday shopping mood before Saturday, that likely changed as snow fell in many parts of West Virginia. It came just in time for small businesses' biggest holiday shopping day.

"It's been a huge success," said Jeanne Hagan of Pinocchio's Books and Toys, in Morgantown. "As soon as I opened up my doors at 10 o'clock this morning, I've had people in. Everyone is doing lots of shopping, they're supporting our downtown. It's just been great, great atmosphere."

Black Friday deals may be stretched over several days, and Cyber Monday may be right around the corner, but Small Business Saturday comes just once a year.

In Morgantown, shoppers hit the streets to support their favorite spots.

"I've known Jeanne forever, she knows what my kids like, she knows what my son likes to read, she knows what kind of dolls my daughter likes, and you just can't get that kind of service from bigger businesses," said shopper Beth Rheingold.

"We've seen a lot of people that I've just never seen in here before, and that's the nice part," said Matt Godwin of Gary's Comics and More. "We've got a lot of regular people that come normally, but we've seen a lot of people come and go that we've never seen before."

The third annual event was started by American Express and is celebrated nationwide. For some people, Small Business Saturday replaces usual Black Friday plans.

"I've had people come in and say ‘Today is my first day of shopping, and my last.' And they're doing it all downtown and it's perfect," said Hagan.

Main Street Morgantown, the city's grassroots downtown revitalization group, co-sponsored this year's event. Group members joined shoppers doing their part to support business too.

"Here it all is," said Main Street Morgantown's director Terri Cutright, as she carried her shopping bags. "We definitely like to embrace what we try to get others to embrace."

Of course holiday shopping is about more than just one weekend, and you can always support your local stores throughout the year.
