The Taylor County Sheriff's Department is alerting residents about a phone scam that has cost some people thousands of dollars.
Sheriff Robert Beltner said the caller preys on the elderly by saying a grandchild is in jail on a DUI charge.
The caller then asks for money to fix the problem.
Beltner said residents who get one of these calls should contact law enforcement.
"Don't start giving out information," Beltner said. "Your social security number, bank information, or don't run somewhere and get the money to be wired out. Don't get that cash and get it wired it out and send it to these people. I guarantee ya, it's going to be a scam. We can't get your money back is the bad thing, we tried."
Beltner said also to be aware of a Publishers Clearing House scam in which a caller will tell you that you've won millions of dollars.
