Potential Budget Cuts Threaten Government Contractors

Posted: Updated:

Sequestration, or across-the-board budget cuts, in the government will be made January 1 if no budget compromise is reached in Congress.

Eric Whytsell and Michael Schrier, attorneys from Jackson Kelly in Washington, D.C., visited the Robert H. Mollohan Research Center in Fairmont Tuesday to present about the issue.

They said these budget cuts could harm government contractors. They said government contractors' customers may lose funding with which to hire the contractors' services. Whytsell also said the budget cuts could lead to uninformed spending.

"What you end up with, if sequestration occurs, is really sort of dumb spending," said Whytsell. "All of the decisions we generally count on government employees to be smart and make in their discretion, they no longer have discretion to make smart choices about how they spend government money."

The presenters said effects from the potential budget cuts will eventually reach everyone, including those not working in government.
