If you cast your ballot on Election Day, there’s a strong chance are you did it in a school or other public building. Schools and churches in the Mountain State are the most common locations for setting up polling places. And it’s been that way for a long time.

CHARLESTON (AP) — West Virginia officials are on course to settle two close legislative races from last week's voting.

The canvass of the general election began Tuesday. Officials in the 55 counties are checking their results and reviewing provisional ballots.

Kanawha County has around 1,100 such ballots. Several were cast in the House of Delegates race where Republican John McCuskey appeared to unseat Delegate Bobbie Hatfield by 64 votes.

Kanawha officials expect to complete their canvass late Tuesday.

Just 74 ballots separated Republican Mike Folk in his win over Democrat Donn Marshall for a Berkeley County House seat. That county's canvass includes around 125 provisional ballots.

Once the final county finishes its canvass, candidates have 48 hours to request recounts. County commissions must then sign off on election results before they're certified.
