If you cast your ballot on Election Day, there’s a strong chance are you did it in a school or other public building. Schools and churches in the Mountain State are the most common locations for setting up polling places. And it’s been that way for a long time.

The Kanawha County Commission will meet as the Board of Canvassers next week to begin the canvass of the Nov. 6 general election.

The board will meet at 7 a.m. Nov. 13 at the Kanawha County Voter's Registration Office in Charleston. Kent Carper, president of the Kanawha County Commission, said the canvassing won't stop until it is finished.

Kanawha County Clerk Vera McCormick said the board will review approximately 1,100 provisional ballots. The Board of Canvassers reviewed approximately 1,300 provisional ballots following the 2008 general election.

The results of the canvass could very well change who represents the 35th district in the House of Delegates. According to unofficial results, about 64 votes separate Republican John McCuskey from longtime legislator Democrat Bobbie Hatfield. McCuskey received 11,259 votes, according to unofficial results.

"The 35th House District race is one race that will likely be closely watched during the canvass of the general election," Carper said. "The public elects four members to the 35th district and right now, before the canvass, there is a 64-vote difference between the fourth and fifth candidates."

Other delegates elected to represent the 35th district are incumbent Democrat Doug Skaff, incumbent Republican Eric Nelson and Republican Suzette Raines.

Absentee ballots that were received by Election Day were counted and are included in the cumulative totals from election night results. Absentee ballots received at the voter's registration office between Election Day and the morning of the canvass will be included in the canvass and the final cumulative official results.

According to state code, each county will declare its results once the canvass is completed. The election cannot be certified until 48 hours after the final county completes its canvass and declares its results.
