WVIAC Basketball Preview: Glenville State Men

Posted: Updated:

There may not be another team in the WVIAC that has helped itself more than the Glenville State men's basketball team. The Pioneers are coached by a former WVIAC standout player and have two former WVU Mountaineers as assistant coaches. Glenville is in the process of building a brand new arena that should be ready by next season.

The buzz around town is the athletic ability of the young team. Head Coach Stephen Dye said he brought in nine freshman and four transfers. The Pioneers will still be led by a few familiar faces from last year.

Junior Point Guard Kevin Gray and sophomore Shooting Guard Jamel Morris were a lethal scoring tandem last season. Coaches and players said this year's team is much different than the ones in years past.

"We're going to be really fast, long and athletic, just versatile," said Coach Dye. "We're not really thick or wide, but we're pretty athletic at most positions. We can go with a starting lineup of 6'4" and above and that's with the point guard and everything. So I'm real excited with our versatility."

"I feel like right now we're probably one of the most athletic teams in the conference," said Gray. "So we should be able to out run people. That's what the coaches have been emphasizing is running and getting up and down the floor, getting in as many possessions as possible."

The Pioneers tip off the season on Tuesday night with an exhibition game against WVU in Morgantown.

Glenville will take on Gannon University in the Ohio Valley Classic on Friday. That will be its first regular season contest.
