It's Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Stonewall Resort is doing its part to help the fight against the disease and relax a little bit at the same time.
The Mountain Laurel Spa is taking the lead for the resort. It's helping support the cause with every purchase made, and the company's supplier will actually make those purchases go even further.
"They, themselves, actually donate to Cancer Schmancer when we purchase that product from them. Then in addition, we make a separate donation out of the proceeds that we get from selling the polish to the West Virginia Susan G. Komen," said spa manager Patricia Schroeder.
The Mountain Laurel Spa is also donating a portion of the cost of its services, but that's not the only way the resort is giving back. Stonewall also hosted a community health fair providing screenings and information to people at the resort and in the community on many issues, including breast cancer among others.
Organizers said no matter what the problem, screenings and prevention can be a big help.
"Blood pressure people sometimes think something's the matter with their health and we had a lady this morning whose blood pressure was a little high and so she is going to the doctor now. And that makes screenings like this worthwhile," said Julia Spelsberg, marketing director for Stonewall Jackson Memorial Hospital, who organized the fair.
Whether people came to the resort for the screenings or the spa, Schroeder said there's a common thread for anyone who comes in.
"We ourselves have had employees not just here in the spa, but at the resort, who have gone through breast cancer, we've had employees who've had breast cancer scares and breast cancer is something that affects everybody," said Schroeder
