After a large fire in the small town of Pickens back in the late 1940s, the town decided to start their own fire department. This was after the closest fire department, Buckhannon, didn't show up until the next day.
Since being charted in 1950, the department has fought fires to harsh Randolph County Winters. In 2009, Mother Nature struck again with a lightning strike that sparked a fire in one of the department's buildings.
The department has many fundraisers each year, the biggest being the Maple Syrup Festival that is held each March in Pickens.
