WVIAC Media Day Brings Coaches Together For 2012 Football Season

Posted: Updated:

As if we needed any more signs that football season is upon us, the WVIAC hosted its inaugural Media Day on Saturday afternoon from Fairmont State University.

Each of the nine football-playing schools were on hand during Media Day.

Moments before the coaches stepped out into the hallway for interviews, the Preseason Poll was released.

West Virginia Wesleyan, Fairmont State and Glenville State were all picked to finish in the middle of the pack.

It's an exciting time of the year as football is fast approaching. Several of the local coaches believe the preseason poll is useless, but others feel as though it does serve a purpose.

"I can tell you specifically that in the short term interim we want to come out of camp healthy," West Virginia Wesleyan head coach Jonas Jackson said. "We want to be in good shape and we want to come out ready to compete."

"As a program we're very excited to get the guys back and get the staff together; get them all here. There's so much new-ness this year with 25 seniors graduating. So this countdown is on and just a few days away, so we're pumped up and ready to roll," Glenville State head coach David Hutchison said.

"Fifth in the league is great," Fairmont State head coach Mike Lopez said. "I think we finished 4-4 in the league, which is .500 and I think fifth is dead middle. So I'm sure everybody says, 'What's preseason predictions. I don't think I'll reference those at all at any portion during the preseason."

Besides the nine football-playing schools on hand at Media Day, Alderson-Broaddus College was also present at the festivities.

Battlers head coach Denny Creehan and the rest of his staff have been working extremely hard to bring football back to Philippi.

A-B will play the upcoming season as a club sport and all games will be on the road as the brand new Performance Stadium undergoes construction.

Coach Creehan is obviously excited for the new season and said bringing football to A-B will only enhance the college into the future.

"It is really amazing because there's so many things you don't even think about," Creehan laughed. "I mean, we went to have a press conference and we didn't have a football. You think about ordering shoe laces and mouth guards and everything from A to Z. It's an incredible experience."
