Greetings from Snowshoe Mountain Resort, I'm Matt Hauswirth with this week's Wild and Wonderful Wednesday. I haven't been mountain biking in quite some time so I decided to give it a try here at Snowshoe. I'm going to get fitted for all the gear inside. Come on in and check it out with me!
As I took a stroll into the bike shop I noticed all the different bikes with various colors and features, until our tour guide Mike took me a bit by surprise with all that body armor.
"Gravity biking is completely unique from cross country biking," Bike Park Manager Mike Baker said. "It's a lot more fun. There's not as much peddling involved. He trails are very flowy. The idea of a well-built trail is that you don't need to use your brakes a whole lot. So it's a completely different experience. It's kind of like a roller coaster on two wheels."
Oh, and it was a roller coaster alright. Over the bridges and through the woods. I slowly but surely made my way through the beginner course at Snowshoe Mountain.
"We actually run on both sides of the mountain," Baker said. "it's a lift access bike park so there's no peddling uphill. You just ride the bike to the bottom of the lift. You put the bike on the chair lift and you ride back to the top."
Then on the last lap I finally faced my fears and went for the plunge down the beginners drop.
Wow, I am exhausted. I had a great time here at Snowshoe Mountain and thank everybody who helped me out along the way. Remember, if you want to learn more about this then just head on over to our website WBOY.com and you really haven't been mountain biking until you've done it here at Snowshoe Mountain.
