It's going to be a big weekend at Snowshoe Mountain Resort. The GNCC Racing Series has arrived on the mountain and all of the condos are completely booked up for the event.
Friday was all about GNCC University where people of all ages went through two full days of riding instruction courtesy of some of the most decorated pros in the sport.
"The GNCC University is a once a year thing that we do. It's very rewarding for us," 18-year racing veteran Johnny Gallagher said. "It's a unique opportunity for us to pass along our collective 100-year plus experience on to these young adults. It's a great opportunity for them to come and learn from some of the best riders in the world."
Snowshoe Mountain Resort is often times regarded as the most challenging stop along the 13 tracks that the GNCC Racing Series visits each year. Friday's riders at the Fourth Annual GNCC University weren't phased by the tough terrain. Instead, they were just happy to be learning from the best.
"It's a great learning experience," Ohio native participant Brian Peters said. "You get to ride with some of the best riders in the world. Bill Ballance was a nine-time national champion. You learn from the best and I'm trying to become like them one day."
"Just the input that the pros give us is just stuff you would never think of," Buckhannon native Brad Pearson said. "It's all the little things, maybe if you do this then it'll improve your lap time this much but it's just stuff you wouldn't normally think of."
At the conclusion of Friday's lessons and competitions, the participants were awarded with a GNCC diploma as official graduates. The students said they got a lot out of it. For the instructors, it's even more fulfilling.
"They all have a good time," nine-time ATV National Champion Bill Ballance said. "It's really exciting to see how much they advance and how they learn. It's really rewarding to be able to do that."
There are races at Snowshoe on Saturday, June 23 and Sunday June 24.
