Restaurant Road Trip: Chaang Thai

Posted: Updated:

If you look up and down High Street in Morgantown, you'll find a lot of shops and restaurants. One thing you would not have found until a couple of months ago was a Thai restaurant. Chaang Thai brought the cuisine back to Morgantown.

"I love Thai food and I always get it when I travel and it's lovely to have it back here in Morgantown again," said customer Debbie Patton, "I try to come here at least once a week."

Morgantown diners like Patton were hungry for a Thai restaurant, and that's just what the owners of Chaang Thai were looking for; that and a strong economy with a vibrant downtown.

After searching college towns up and down the eastern coast, Raja Gopal Sundaran and his wife visited Morgantown.

"Finally, we came down to Morgantown and the moment I saw the High Street and realized that there's no Thai restaurant here, I got the confidence that this is the place we want to be," Sundaran said.

After just a few months in business, Chaang Thai has gained plenty of loyal clients, especially among the offices downtown.

Brandon Benchoff was picking up an order for his office.

"I think it adds a lot of culture to right here in downtown Morgantown," he said. "It's been a long time since we've had a place like this, with really, really good Thai food so we come here as often as we can."

"The whole office is obsessed with it," he added.

The food and the atmosphere caters to the diverse population brought in by West Virginia University, but it also brings in people who may not be familiar with Thai cuisine.

"The entire menu, we designed in such a way that it guides a newcomer to order the right food for them," Sundaran said.

It's hard to go wrong since every order is made fresh and exactly to your tastes.

"You can order it to your spiciness," Patton said, "like I usually order chicken pad Thai no spice, but you can get it extremely spicy."

Chaang Thai is open for lunch and dinner seven days a week.
