Restaurant Road Trip: Soldier's Skillet

Posted: Updated:

The town of Beverly in Randolph County is pretty evident with history when you visit there, and what better way to take a break from all that learning than to go inside and enjoy a nice meal at the Soldier's Skillet Restaurant.

The restaurant opened eight months ago. The building was once a feed store and grocery store, and its near historic buildings that date back to where crucial Civil War battles were fought in. That's why owner Billy Davis created the restaurant's name.

"It fits Beverly, because of the history of Beverly with the Civil War and everything," said Davis.

The Soldier's Skillet offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner with many of the dishes carrying a Civil War theme. On certain nights the restaurant will offer specialty meals.

"We have beans and cornbread on Wednesday, then Thursdays we have hot turkey sandwiches with mashed potatoes and vegetable salad. Friday we have baked steak, and Saturdays we're going to have lasagna," said Davis.

Davis said the Soldier's Skillet prides itself in making everything homemade.

"I don't think there's many restaurants around in Beverly or in Elkins that does homemade, and everything we do is made from scratch so we try to bring that here," said Davis.

Customers said they enjoy the convenience of the location or to bring family members visiting from out town.

"I have an office in Beverly, so its nice to have some place to eat that you can just walk to," said attorney Earl W. Maxwell.

"We just love having a local restaurant, and food is wonderful, we've really enjoyed it, it's a very cozy place, easy to get to," said Anita Gordon, who was visiting family from Philadelphia, Pa.

The restaurant is open Wednesday and Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., Friday and Saturdays from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Soldier's Skillet can also be found on Facebook.
