Black Bears Win, But Playoff Chances Vanish Video included

Entering a Labor Day matinee clash with Williamsport, the Black Bears' chances of making the postseason were as slim as could be. With four games to play, West Virginia was 3.5 games behind both Mahoning Valley in the Pinckney Division and Hudson Valley in the wild card race. The Bears needed a win and some help to stay in contention another day.

GRANVILLE, WV – With just 10 games to go, the Black Bears entered Tuesday's game with State College fighting for their playoff lives. They fell behind 8-0, and it looked like they'd easily lose their eighth game in nine tries. But they fought back, slowly but surely. They even pulled ahead of the Spikes in the seventh inning, taking a 9-7 lead. And then, for the sixth time in nine contests, that lead disappeared, leaving the Black Bears with nothing to show for their efforts.

A lot can change in seven days. For the Black Bears, one week is the difference between a playoff berth and an early end to the season. Just a week ago, the Black Bears led the Penn League Pinckney Division, but after a 10-6 loss to State College Monday night, they've fallen into a tie for second place, four games behind Mahoning Valley.

Sandy Santos and Lucas Tancas each homered, helping pitcher Scooter Hightower to his third win of the season, and propelling the Black Bears to a win to open their six-game homestand.

The Black Bears entered their Wednesday night doubleheader with State College trailing Mahoning Valley by a half-game in the Pinckney Division standings. A pair of wins in that twin bill would guarantee the Bears at least a share of the division lead before the end of the night. West Virginia didn't sweep the doubleheader, but it did get its share of first place in the division.

Tristan Gray's ninth inning RBI double boosted West Virginia to a 2-1 victory over Auburn Thursday night, boosting the Black Bear's league-leading winning streak to six games. Bligh Madris scored the winning run after reaching base on an error in the ninth.

The first African-born player to reach the majors has joined the Black Bears on a rehab assignment. Infielder Gift Ngoepe started at shortstop for West Virginia in its 8-5 extra-inning victory over Mahoning Valley Tuesday night. Ngoepe went 0-3 with a strikeout. Ngoepe made his big league debut with the Pirates earlier this season, and was reassigned to Class AAA Indianapolis in early June. He's currently recovering from a hamstring injury.

Matt Diorio's three-RBI triple sparked a four-run eighth inning for West Virginia, giving the Black Bears some insurance and propelling them to a 7-2 win over Williamsport in their first road game of the year.
